Under the correct leading of Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the PRC, Party Committee of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the government, the China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) Tourism Exhibition (hereinafter referred to as tourism exhibition) was held wonderfully with the support of related departments and all sectors of society and the joint effort of Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, CAEXPO Secretariat and Guilin Municipal People’s Government.


I. Upgrading the exhibition through five-year tempering

CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition has been successfully held for five sessions since 2015. With the collaboration of the sponsors and organizers, the tourism exhibition has gradually become a great event for connectivity and exchange between domestic and overseas tourism with constant upgrading.


i. Joining into the construction of Belt & Road
Guilin saw the first CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition opening and acted as a permanent home. CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition is the first special exhibition outside Nanning, creating a new pattern to hold a special exhibition in different place. It was a new measure that the CAEXPO took to explore bilateral tourism cooperation on the occasion of “Golden Decade” of China-ASEAN cooperation marching towards the “Diamond Decade”, leading to a brand new high-level international platform for the cooperation, manifesting Guangxi’s new mission to build an important gateway for Belt & Road in a new round of reform and opening up. Thus, Guilin, the international tourism resort will actively take new development strategy toward south, north, east and west, seize the opportunity and create new advantage and join in the construction of Belt & Road so as to speed up Guangxi and Guilin’s opening up and development and help the realization of “Two Buildings” goal.


ii. Improve economic and trade cooperation level
The tourism exhibition keeps expanding cooperation with ten ASEAN countries, inviting officials from ASEAN countries and businessmen to attend exhibition, attracting more exhibitor and buyer. Accordingly, the number and quality of attendees increase year by year, fully developing the effect of the guest of honor activities and tourism forums and enlarging bilateral investment so as to promote China-ASEAN tourism exchange.


iii. The three great events
2016 saw the first time that CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition was held in parallel with UNWTO/PATA Forum on Tourism Trends and Outlook and Guilin International Landscape Culture & Tourism Festival, the two traditional events in Guilin and lasted until now. The three events have their own features and enhance each other, which represents the ability of Guilin to organize events, shows the good quality of Guilin’s tourism and culture and advances its image and position.


iv. The mode of exhibition keeps innovation
Firstly, the tourism exhibition broke the limitation of time and space. In the previous four sessions, it took three days to hold tourism exhibition in Guilin International Convention and Exhibition Center. But in this year, the Cultural and Creative Exhibition, a newly-added branch venue in Wayao Town was prolonged to six days. Secondly, the tourism exhibition broke the mode of exhibiting tourism products, combining tourism with the regional culture and deepening the intension and extension of tourism industry. Thirdly, high participation and rich experience. In this tourism exhibition, many online and offline activities, including photography contest, performance, cultural and creative products display, on-spot lucky drawing and enjoying food were set to attract citizens and visitors. The tourism exhibition gained more and more praise.


In the course of the past five years, the tourism exhibition gained fruitful results and won the reputation of “2015 China Top Ten Brand of Exhibition”. Also, it has been ranked as one of the 2016 five tourism exhibitions in Asian-Pacific region that should be planned to attend by Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and one of the 2016 six tourism exhibitions that should be key to attend by Cambodian Ministry of Tourism.


II. Persisting in innovation as the lead and grasping the cooperative orientation

With the purpose of strengthening China-ASEAN tourism exchange and cooperation, serving for the construction of Belt & Road and promoting people-to-people bond, aiming to be a world-class exhibition, this tourism exhibition highlighted the theme of “persisting in innovation as the lead, deepening opening up and cooperation of China-ASEAN tourism”, committed to promote good neighbourly and friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation between China and ASEAN and helped building closer China-ASEAN community of shared future. The total main exhibition covered the area of 25 thousand sqm. and the area used to display covered 1575 sqm., with 70% special booth rate. The exhibitors and trade visitors came from 71 foreign countries and regions and 27 domestic provinces(autonomous regions, municipality)and 13 cities in Guangxi. The demand of exhibition booth exceeded supply with 800 exhibitors and 2022 trade visitors. 300 trade visitors were attracted for Chinses tourism market, including 200 foreign buyers, who came from 41 countries and regions, such the US, Canada, Italy, Russia, Japan, South Korea and so on and 100 domestic buyers of outbound travel agency from Beijing, Guangdong, Sichuan, Shaanxi, etc. This tourism exhibition achieved fruitful results with high quality and large number of buyers.


The tourism exhibition attached high emphasis to creativity and the integration of culture and tourism.


At first, displaying Guilin’s characteristics. Guilin Bloodstone element was combined into the opening ceremony, booth building and atmosphere creating. The exhibition set a booth of Guilin Bloodstone, Landscape Culture reflecting with Jade Culture harmoniously in the pavilion, enriching Guilin’s beauty.


Secondly, a branch venue, Cultural and Creative Exhibition in Wayao Town was added firstly. Depanding on Wayao Town’s traditional industries which included rare stone, root carving, jewelry, calligraphy and painting, and integrating into culture, tourism and Internet, the branch venue showed Guilin’s characteristics and creative tourism through recreational activities. As a new carrier of Guangxi’s tourism development, Cultural and Creative Exhibition in Wayao Town implemented Guidance of General Office of the State Council About Promoting All-For-One Tourism and Ministry of Culture 13th Five-Year Development Planning on Cultural Industry, which promoted the development of Guangxi’s cultural and creative industry.


Thirdly, the routes for foreign buyers to inspect focused on Guilin’s historic culture and Red Tourism. The exhibition arranged two routes, which are the route of Guilin Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, Peach Blossom Bay Tourism Resort, Reed Flute Cave Scenic Park and Guilin Theater-Guilin Museum-Guilin Library, and the route of Xiangjiang River Battle in Red Army’s Long March Memorial Park, Xiangjiang River Battle Xinxu Blocking Fight Jiuhaijing Red Army Memorial Park, Red Army Breaking Through Xiangjiang in Long March Martyr Memorial Park. Also, North Guangxi Red Culture Travel Route was promoted.


Fourthly, focusing on new content. During the exhibition time, there were various exchanges, shows and promotion activities held, such as Liquan Beer Music Festival, the 5th Guilin International Food and Culture Festival, Qiannan original performance, photography contest, promotion and lucky drawing and ASEAN style show.

III. Speeding up multilateral communication, promoting trade and economy development

Based on China-ASEAN tourism cooperation and faced to the global tourism market, tourism exhibition will boost the exchange between regional tourism and major tourist source countries and creates an international tourism cooperative platform with regional characteristic.

Firstly, remarkable business results. Representatives from 360 companies both at home and abroad attended the trade fair held on the first day. In form of one-to-one business talk, over 3000 business talks were held, which promoted exchange and cooperation for companies and facilitated projects landing.


Secondly, enlarging regional cooperation to a new level. The tourism exhibition set Guangxi International Sister Cities Pavilion that four foreign sister cities, including Suratthani Province of Thailand, Quang Nam Province of Vietnam, Kumamoto City of Japan and Jeju City of South Korea attended. The four sister cities developed various activities, such as folk performances, tourism resource promotion and business talk. Thus, tourism exhibition has become another platform for the exchange and cooperation between Guangxi and its sister cities.


Thirdly, holding China-ASEAN Inbound Tourism E-Commerce Forum 2019 under the framework of CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition. Related experts and tourism enterprises were invited to the forum. Taking “Relying on national strategy of establishing Guilin the international tourism resort and creating new format and new pattern of inbound tourism” as theme, the forum accorded with the orientation of national tourism development, discuss China-ASEAN tourism trend and seek for new cooperation and development. Through multi-level and multi-field exchanges, the forum established more cooperative mechanisms, which enhanced tourism exchange and cooperation between China and ASEAN and gave play to the role of exchange platform of trade and culture.


Moreover, the Yue Gui Qian High-Speed Rail Economic Belt has expanded to Yunnan Province with the member cities adding from 13 to 21. Guilin took the baton from the 5th Yue Gui Qian Dian High-Speed Rail Economic Belt Joint Committee to hold the meeting and set a booth in tourism exhibition. Choosing “Promoting all-for-one tourism cooperation, creating the best high-speed rail economic belt” as theme, the 5th Yue Gui Qian Dian High-Speed Rail Economic Belt Joint Conference depended on CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition and closely linked to tourism development and cooperation resulting in boosting the tourism cooperation among Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and regions surrounding, integrating into Belt & Road Construction and national strategy of Pan-Pearl River Delta “9+2” Cities, playing a leading role of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, deepening comprehensive cooperation with other cities, HK and Macao, which made new contribution to the forming of regional economic system with “advantage complementary, resources sharing, huge market and vigour”.


IV. Closely linking to theme of “China-ASEAN Exchange and Cooperation”, strengthening Belt & Road Construction

Keeping in its national class and international level, the tourism exhibition invited Li Qun, the CCP group member and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the PRC, Zhao Leqin, Vice Director of the Standing Committee of People’s Conference of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Secretary of Guilin Municipal Party Committee and the Director of the Standing Committee of People’s Conference of Guilin, Li Bin, Vice President of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the officials from International Exchange and Cooperation Bureau of Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the PRC, Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the leaders who attended the 5th Yue Gui Qian Dian High-Speed Rail Economic Belt Joint Conference. Ten ASEAN countries all participated in the exhibition and sent distinguished guests to attend opening ceremony.


Six pavilions were set in this tourism exhibition, including Belt & Road Pavilion, Outbound Tourism Pavilion, International Tourism Product Pavilion, Tourism Consumption Pavilion, Guangxi Tourism Image Pavilion and Domestic Tourism Pavilion. In this session, High-Speed Rail Economic Belt Urban Tourism Pavilion and the branch venue in Wayao Town were newly set and several meetings and activities were held, such as Yue Gui Qian Dian project matching meeting, tourism promotion, seller-buyer matching, travelling route inspection for buyers, activities of guest of honor and investment talks and signing ceremony of tourism projects, which helped a batch of tourism industries and landmark projects landing, strengthened tourism exchange among countries and promoted people-to-people bond.


V. High-profile publicity with wide coverage, and wonderful activities

As China-ASEAN cooperation upgraded, the tourism exhibition, working as a carrier of China-ASEAN tourism market drove Guangxi’s tourism industry towards the world with high quality and caught high attention from Chinese and foreign media with high profile and wide coverage. There were about 50 media reporting and broadcasting live; China Daily, China Tourism News and Guangxi Daily issued special reports; Finance and Economy Channel of CCTV, Guilin TV Station broadcast live; Guilin Daily and Guilin Evening Post issued in-depth reports with pictures and articles of tourism exhibition for several days and editions; Media governed by Guilin’s government and several foreign media interviewed 20 guests and exhibitor representatives, displaying Guilin’s scene and landscape to the world.


The publicity of tourism exhibition embodied its culture, creativity and pluralism. At first, on the photography contest, contestants took photos to record precious moments and achievements of the tourism exhibition. Secondly, there were activities held during the exhibition, like Chinese tradition costume and etiquette performance, Qiannan original performance, experiencing new technology, recreation games and award-winning quiz so that people can learn more about the exhibition, meanwhile, the activities attracted people to attend the exhibition, gaining popularity and reputation.


CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition 2019 has been rounded off, which will base on China and ASEAN region to build an international platform integrating with exhibition, communication and business, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance mutual understanding and friendship, form public support for the construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and gradually reach consensus on building China-ASEAN community of shared future.
